Create a small art quilt with these 4 ideas and bring to next meeting for show and tell
1. Inspired by something you would find in your backyard
2. Use one thing on your quilt that is NOT from a fabric store
3. Use a small amount of zinger fabric
4. Consider value contrasts in your piece
Your art quilt can be any style, technique or size. It can be abstract, stylized or realistic. Most important thing: experiment and have fun! Don’t worry about making a masterpiece…this is a learning experience!
Some thoughts on using value contrasts:
· Use lights and darks together for drama
· Use darks, mediums and lights for interest and harmony
· For backgrounds, use light or dark value so it contrasts well with the design elements. A light background with medium and dark elements OR a dark background with light and medium elements will show off your design
· The contrast of lightest light next to darkest dark in your design will automatically draw the viewer’s eye and create a focal point
· A primarily dark quilt with light and medium accents or a primarily light quilt with dark and medium accents can be very striking
· To soften harsh contrast, quilt over the area with contrasting dark thread or light thread
· Use values that are close together to give the design a calm appearance
