Challenge: Use the concepts/look of the Modern Quilt Movement in an Art quilt, wall hanging, lap or baby quilt, pillow, placemat, tote bag or anything else you can think of.
The Modern Quilt Movement
v Fresh, minimalist look, clean lines, architectural, colorful
v Modern fabrics – non-traditional prints and lots of solids
v Modern blocks, reinvented traditional blocks or improvised/no rules piecing
v Similar, but different blocks or elements in the quilt often with a variety in size and placement
v Negative space – often with single neutral, or pale or dark color as the background
v Lots of texture – achieved through prints and quilting
v Inspired by Gee’s Bend and Amish quilts
v Simple back art is common

Modern quilting is a new twist on the traditional art of quilting that is rapidly gaining interest from the next wave of quilters.Modern quilts and quilters:
- Make primarily functional quilts but place a large emphasis on the design and art of quilt making
- Use asymmetry in quilt design
- Rely less on repetition and on the interaction of quilt block motifs
- May contain reinterpreted traditional blocks

- Utilize alternative block structures or lack of visible block structure
- Incorporate increased use of negative space
