Challenge 46: Cutouts a la Matisse
As young girls, we enjoyed cutting
out paper dolls and snowflakes, didn’t we?
Let’s use that sense of play and creativity to make an art quilt using
cutouts. Henri Matisse started using
paper cutouts when he became ill and wheelchair bound. His cutout work is some of his most expressive
and cherished work. Also, there are lots
of very old cutout traditions to consider:
Notan, Hawaiian quilting, Ralli applique quilts, African American story quilts
like those made by Harriet Powers, cutwork applique, etc.
